A New Sustainable Shift

College In New York = A New Sustainable Shift

In the fall of 2018, I’ve taken the initiative of jumping all the way over to the East Coast for a major college move. My time spent researching and learning everything there is to know and discover about sustainability has expanded the mindset I had about it all immensely. As I move to the Big Apple, I really wanted to discover ways that I could keep in touch with the things I’ve learned about ethical shopping and having that sustainable lifestyle kept alive.

Transitioning from a high school student in a small city from Washington to a college girl in Manhattan, it’s pretty easy to stick to the easier or less thought about routes instead of thinking smart and sustainably. New York is filled with incredible sustainable options left and right, which allows me to build a platform where I can share all of the work The Chayah Movement has built and pushed me towards. I am over the moon to present all of the amazing work this company has worked on, as well as finding and sharing sustainable shops around the city to jumpstart one’s sustainable lifestyle in a new environment.

There are plenty of small eco-friendly boutiques and lifestyle stores in New York that deserve way more recognition for the movement they are apart of, if you’re new to the city, here are just a few to definitely keep in mind!

KAIGHT

  • A Brooklyn based boutique looking to provide consumers with fashion-forward clothing and accessory options that meet the following criteria: local production, organic textiles, reclaimed materials, fair trade, zero waste. KAIGHT emphasizes on unique sustainable fashion clothing, shoes and accessories.

EILEEN FISHER

  • Just like your local sustainable Eileen Fisher in Seattle, there seems to be one on every corner in New York. A total of six stores can be located in NYC alone, which means shopping eco-friendly will become less of a hassle and much more convenient when needing a retail therapy session ASAP. The stores can be found on: Columbus Circle, Flatiron District, Midtown, Soho, Upper East Side and Upper West Side.

THE LAUNDRESS

  • What exactly are they about? Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd seem to take an interesting eco twist on doing laundry, “We're an eco-friendly line of detergent, fabric care, and home cleaning products that take excellent care of you, the things you love, and the environment.” Their products involve an amazing list of non toxic and biodegradable ingredients, ontop of using fewer ounces per load which requires less packaging, energy, and water. (Located in Soho, New York).
